Dezember 2011 – Vier, teilweise verletzte, Delfine wurde in einer Nacht- und Nebelaktion aus dem Meereskäfig-Delfinarium in Bodrum in einen anderen Meereskäfig nach Kas transportiert. Bei dem “Delfinarium” in Kas handelt es sich um einen verrosteten Drahtkäfig, der in einer Bucht in Kas im Uferbereich installiert wurde.

Bei einem Empfang im Bürgermeisteramt im April 2011 wurde uns zugesichert, dass es nach der ursprünglichen Schließung des Delfinparks in Kas nie wieder Delfine in Gefangenschaft dort geben sollte. Nun haben die Stadtverantwortlichen ihr Versprechen gebrochen. Das WDSF und die Tierschutz-Organisation ProWal bereiten einen internationalen Boykott-Aufruf für die Touristenstadt vor. Kas ist die Partnerstadt des rheinischen Brühl.

Gee, the world hasn’t changed all that much in my lifetime, has it?  It’s not like people were still communicating with smoke signals in my infancy.  Let’s see–what didn’t exist when I was born?  Color TV.  Stereophonic sound.  Jet airliners.  Solid state circuitry.  NASA.  Computers smaller than a log cabin.   Ouch!  Mark!  Don’t remind yourself how old you are.  See folks, technology has me talking to myself.  I know… I know… that’s what blogging amounts to in the first place.  Now, back to the salt mines…

Bhutan’s Organic Dream

It is a beautiful dream on par with the legendary Shangri-La: a farming country that produces only 100 per cent organic greens. The goal is all the more attractive because it fits in with Bhutan’s drive towards sustainable living, as set out in the country’s Gross National Happiness philosophy.

But the challenges are great. Many Bhutanese farmers live in remote villages, while others find that their crops do not thrive without pesticides and fertilizers. The country only produces 60 per cent of the crops it needs, never mind whether they are organic or not.

We find out what the Bhutanese have to say about their Organic Dream.

Animal rights activists have been branded with hot irons today (20th March 2013) in protest of the use of animals in the meat, dairy and egg industries. The campaigners followed the lead of activists in Tel Aviv, Israel who, in October 2012, branded themselves with the number ‘269’. This was the number branded on a dairy calf who has become a symbol of animal exploitation worldwide. 269life events are planned on 21st March 2013 across the world including a solidarity event in Leeds (in honour of the brandees) where 3 activists in each location will be permanently branded with the number ‘269’ in solidarity with all animals suffering for food production.

One of the campaigners who was branded as part of Leeds event, Aran Mathai, said “I’ve always thought that it was strange that we define ourselves as a “moral and civilised” society, and yet routinely massacre…

I am belatedly posting this piece as at the time of the event police and CID threats made my speech a liability, that hasn’t changed, the only thing that is any different to  previously is now I’m past caring for threats or promises.

Recently I was branded in the uk in solidarity with animals placed in the horrendous industry of slaughter for human consumption. I do not regret my decision, and even if this mark does not fade for the rest of my life I never will. There are many reasons I felt compelled to participate in this action some obvious, some not so much, but my primary reason is straightforward.

In the dairy industry cows are raised to be constantly in a state of pregnancy, when they are not pregnant they have just given birth. At that point the mother is given one single day with their child, one…

EWA (Chicago) – USDA data for the first quarter of 2013 indicates a precipitous drop in the number of horses going from the US to Mexico for slaughter. The flow of horses south had been increasing steadily for over two years but dropped 62% between the first full week of 2013 and the end of the first quarter.

Since the closing of the US based horse slaughter plants in 2007, US horses have been going to slaughter in Canada and Mexico for consumption in the European Union (EU) and Russia. Beginning in late January of this year horse meat began to be detected masquerading as beef in countless products across Europe and much of the world.
