Tens of thousands of indignados bring Madrid to a complete standstill in a spontaneous and defiant bid to reclaim Puerta del Sol from the police.
It was to be predicted. When municipal and national police evicted the 15-M information booth at Puerta del Sol this morning, destroying the spiritual heart of the protest movement (including the banners, pictures and pieces of art which had been so painstakingly collected over the past 2,5 months), they knew they were in for a ride.
That’s why they came with 300 of them, in 20 armed vehicles, blocking off the entire square and taking absolutely no chances whatsoever that the indignadoswould come back in larger numbers to reclaim the square. All day long, they kept the square hermetically sealed off, even blocking the Sol metro station — one of the largest and most important in the city.
But what happened tonight — in fact, what is on display right now, as I’m writing this — came unexpected even for myself. Given the unbearable heat of summer, most madrileños generally flee the city to the countryside in the month of august. This is probably why the police only made their decisive move now, instead of a few weeks ago. They expected less resistance than before.
But tonight, it looks like no one ever really left Madrid. Tens of thousands of people have completely blocked Madrid’s city center in a spontaneous outburst of indignation at the disrespectful removal of protesters from the movement’s ground-zero. At 20:00, thousands of indignados were crammed into all six access routes to Sol, with a genuine army of police (including at least 50 vans, according to El País) keeping them out.
When they realized they couldn’t take the square, the protesters quickly dissolved into a dozen side-streets and regrouped on a number of key locations: Cibeles, Atocha and Congreso, among them. For hours now, protesters have been blocking all the main traffic arteries in the city center. The mass protest is now reported to be headed back towards Sol for a second time, in another attempt to take back the square.
One Spanish journalist, writing for El País, just Tweeted that the situation is becoming increasingly tense. “How are they going to stop so many people all trying to access Sol from the same access route?” Apparently the protesters are chanting furiously “let’s evict the police camp!” The atmosphere, according to journalists contributing to this live blog, is extremely tense, with hundreds of police in full riot gear being forced back by the sheer volume of people present.
It was always stupid to try and kick the protesters out of the square. Just as we wrote before, during the violent attempt to clear protesters off the main square in Barcelona two months ago, these type of actions tend to backfire and blow up right in the face of the authorities. Today’s eviction gave the movement exactly what it needed: another symbol of injustice to fight against, another cause for which to rally — in this case, freedom of expression and freedom of assembly.
Either way, the result of the government’s folly has been to galvanize the movement at a time when most people considered it dormant. The eviction of Sol even sparked Barcelona back to life: tonight, the popular assembly at AcampadaBCN decided to re-occupy Plaça de Catalunya for at least one night in solidarity with the indignados of Madrid. Similar actions are being sparked in cities across the country.

Nach der Räumung ihres Protestcamps im Zentrum von Madrid durch die Polizei haben mehr als tausend spanische Aktivisten für den Wiederaufbau des Zeltlagers auf der Puerta del Sol aufgerufen. „Das ist unser Platz“, riefen die Demonstranten den Sicherheitskräften entgegen, die das Gelände streng abgeriegelt hielten. Das Camp der „Empörten“, im Zuge dessen vor allem junge Menschen gegen den rigiden Sparkurs der Regierung, die Macht der Banken und die hohe Arbeitslosigkeit demonstrierten, war bereits Mitte Juni einmal geräumt worden.

Auch Klubradio, der letzte Sender, der noch kritische und fundierte Berichterstattung wagt, kämpft ums Überleben: Erst wurden die Werbeaufträge sämtlicher staatlicher Institutionen entzogen, jetzt vergibt die Medienbehörde die Frequenz neu. Natürlich kann sich Klubradio um die Frequenz bewerben, Ungarn ist ja schließlich ein demokratisches Land. Nur kostet die Frequenz jetzt das Doppelte.
Ach ja, und es gibt noch eine Auflage: Die Behörde wünscht sich einen Unterhaltungssender. Das bedeutet, dass während 60 Prozent der Sendezeit Popmusik läuft und ein Viertel der Sendezeit lokaler Berichterstattung und heiteren Geschichten gewidmet werden muss. Im Klartext: Klubradio hätte noch 15 Prozent der Zeit, um das zu tun, wofür es in den letzten zehn Jahren immer größeren Zulauf erhielt: selbstrecherchierte, unabhängige Beiträge zu senden und politisch relevante Themen zu verhandeln.
An denen mangelt es weiß Gott nicht: Zur Bekämpfung der Arbeitslosigkeit plant die Regierung die Einführung von Zwangsarbeit und Arbeitslagern. Heiner Geißler wurde heute morgen im Deutschlandfunk zu den Schlichtungsgesprächen rund um S21 interviewt. Dabei ging es auch um eine Äußerung von ihm, die am vergangenen Freitag gefallen ist: “Wollt Ihr den totalen Krieg?” hat er wohl die Teilnehmer an den Schlichtungsgesprächen gefragt und damit Joseph Goebbels zitiert. Darauf wurde er im Deutschlandfunk angesprochen und hat sich im Verlauf um Kopf und Kragen geredet. Die spannende Stelle beginnt ab Minute 6 im Interview:
DLF: Verharmlosen Sie damit die Sprechweise der Nazis?
Heiner Geißler: Achwas, das ist keine Sprechweise der Nazis. Den totalen Krieg gibt es auch woanderswo. Den haben wir zur Zeit in Syrien.
DLF: Aber die Frage “Wollt Ihr den totalen Krieg?” stammt von Joseph Goebbels.
Heiner Geißler: Da wissen Sie mehr als ich.
DLF: Nochmals die Frage: War das Ihre Absicht?
Heiner Geißler: Hallo? Was war meine Absicht?
DLF: Die Sprechweise der Nazis zu verharmlosen?
Heiner Geißler: Ich glaube, Sie sind wohl auf dem Mond zuhause.

“Ich unterbreche meine Ferien, denn es passiert genau das was ich befürchtet habe. Trotz sogenannter Einigung im US-Schuldenstreit ist der Franken heute noch stärker geworden. Es findet eine massenhafte Flucht in den sichern Hafen statt.
Der Euro kostet fast nur noch einen Franken und der Dollar ist auf einem historischen Tiefststand. Um 16:00 Uhr MEZ begann die Panik, 10:00 Uhr New Yorker Zeit, und die beiden Währung stürzten fast senkrecht gegenüber dem Franken innerhalb von Minuten ab.
Der Dollar wurde mit 0,7761 gehandelt, noch nie so tief. Und beim Euro ist es viel schlimmer. Der Kurs fiel auf 1,1085. Das sind Verluste von 1,40 bzw. 2,4 Prozent an einem Tag!!!
Was haben aber die Medien noch heute Vormittag gemeldet? US-Einigung hilft Börsen auf die Sprünge. Sie hätten positiv reagiert.
Reines Wunschdenken, denn genau das Gegenteil ist der Fall, verdammtes Lügenpack.
Dieser dramatische Kursverlust zeigt, die Märkte trauen weder dem Dollar noch dem Euro. Sie schmeissen dieses wertlose Zeug weg und kaufen Franken.
Auf der anderen Seite wird die Frankenstärke der Schweizer Wirtschaft brutal schaden. Die Produkte und Dienstleistungen werden aus Sicht der Eurozone viel zu teuer.
Der Euro hat innerhalb 3 Jahren 30 Prozent an Wert verloren!
Heute am 1. August feiern die Schweizer ihren Nationalfeiertag, 720 Jahre der Eidgenossenschaft. Die Politiker schwingen grosse Reden und feiern sich selber. Dabei ist das Land in einer Krise, die von Aussen verursacht wird und weil die Volksvertreter und Währungshüter (lach) nur tatenlos zuschauen.”

Ob die Polizei die Anweisung hatte den Tag der Kriegsmarine vor dem unpassenden Bild der Demonstranten zu bereinigen oder ganz allgemein die Geduld mit den friedlichen Demonstranten verliert ist nicht bekannt.

A week ago, approximately 500 indigenous families occupied a land that officially belongs to the company Ledesma. Ledesma is owned by the Blaquier family, an ally of the Jorge Rafael Videla’s murderous regime (the dictator of Argentina from 1976 to 1981). The occupiers demanded the landowners to give them back their lands. The police under the orders of the company owners and the government attacked the families during their sleep, throwing gas and rubber bullets on their tents, or setting them on fire, killing three and wounding six others, including one person who is in hospital in critical condition, while an infant of 1.5 months experienced severe respiratory problems. The chief of police stated that the squatters were armed (!!!). Unemployment, poverty and inflation are the main problems facing the state of Jujuy and, especially, the area of Libertador. Ledesma is the largest landowner with 157,556 hectares. According to estimates, only 40 hectares would be enough to solve the problem of housing in Libertador
