Iceland’s special prosecutor has taken Larus Welding, the former head of the failed Glitnir Bank, into custody, Reuters reports.
Glitnir Bank was the first of the top three Icelandic commercial banks to fail in 2008.
Former director of market trade Jóhannes Baldursson and former broker Ingi Rafn Júlíusson were also taken into custody and between ten and twenty other former employees of Glitnir Bank were also investigated.
They are expected to be held for a week, apparently to prevent tampering with evidence or witness coercion.

“In erster Linie bedeutet abnormal natürlich einen Hinweis auf kriminelles Verhalten”, sagt Patrick Hasenfuß von der Firma Psi Transcom, die für Indect die technische Plattform liefern soll, die alle Informationsquellen verknüpft. “Das Erkennen von ungewöhnlichen Situationen führt zunächst dazu, dass ein Mensch sich das ansieht”, sagt Hasenfuß. “Da ist keine automatische Verurteilung angeschlossen.”
Psi Transcom ist spezialisiert auf Software, die U-Bahnhöfe und den öffentlichen Nahverkehr steuert. Hasenfuß hofft, mit dem System automatisch Brände zu erkennen. Oder ob jemand im Gleisbett liegt und Hilfe braucht. Oder ob er eine Schusswaffe trägt. Die Nähe zu Universitäten macht es für die Industrie verlockend, bei Indect mitzuarbeiten.
“Die EU-Kommission möchte uns mit dem Projekt Zugang zu Forschungseinrichtungen und Anwendern verschaffen”, sagt Hasenfuß. Über Jahre hinweg könne man so beobachten, was an Hochschulen gelehrt werde “und wie technologische Weiterentwicklungen aussehen können”.
Wo Indect hinführen soll, fragen sich mittlerweile auch einige EU-Parlamentarier. “Das ist nicht nur ein massiver Eingriff in die Persönlichkeitsrechte, der Einsatz von Indect würde unsere Gesellschaft von den Füßen auf den Kopf stellen”, sagt der Europaabgeordnete Alexander Alvaro von der FDP. Die Tragweite einer Rundumüberwachung sei von keinem Verantwortlichen ausreichend berücksichtigt worden, meint der FDP-Innenexperte.

Kaum bemerkt von der Öffentlichkeit fördert die EU ein Kontrollsystem mit Kameras, Drohnen, Gesichtserkennung, Bildanalyse und der Überwachung von Webseiten. Europe: Please Save My Son from the Death Penalty in Belarus
On November 30th the Supreme Court of Belarus sentenced my son Uladzislau Kavalyou (Vladislav Kovalev) and another young man Dzmitry Kanavalau (Dmitry Konovalov) to death.
Kanavalau was convicted in organizing the terrorist attacks in 2005 in Vitebsk, in 2008 in Minsk, and in the subway of Minsk in April 2011. My son Uladzislau was convicted of aiding.
The accusations are based on the statements made by these two young men, which, as many believe, were given under physical and emotional pressure. None of what has been said in court is supported by any evidence. My son insists he had not been involved in the terrorist attack and suggested Dzmitry Kanavalau has no relation to them either.
I believe that my son is innocent.
So do victims of the attack and many international human rights organizations:
– The victims of the attack have a number of questions regarding the impartiality and transparency of the trial and access to the case materials. Aliaksandr Kruty, a representative of one of the injured from the April attack Inesa Krutaya, made a motion to abolish the death penalty and asked the court to defer consideration of the case. A few days later – on September 20th – he was arrested and sent to a mental hospital allegedly for hooliganism. None of their motions were considered by the court;
– The defendants claimed that they were exposed to torture during the investigation to extract confessions.
– During the trial, independent journalists were banned from communicating with victims. The official media already refer to Kavalyou and Kanavalau as terrorists without awaiting the decision of the court.
With this petition, I am turning to you asking one single thing: I am asking you not to kill my son Uladzislau Kavalyou and Dzmitry Kanavalau, but instead to find those who are actually responsible for these terrorist crimes.
At the moment Belarus is the only country in Europe, which continues to execute death sentences. And while these two men being murdered, those who are responsible for the attacks are walking freely.

Kanavalau and Kavalyou sentenced to death.
Judge of the Supreme Court Alyaksandr Fedartsou has made such sentence on November 30. According to it, Kanavalau is guilty of the blasts, and Kavalyou – of cooperation and failure to report.

The court has announced that Dzmitry Kanavalau conducted the blasts in Vitsebsk and Uladzislau Kavalyou knew about it and failed to report to the competent bodies.
As for the events of July 4, 2008, Kanavalau has been considered guilty of organization of the blast, and Kavalyou – of failure to report again.
Speaking about the metro blast in Minsk, the court has established that Kanavalau conducted the blast and Kavalyou acted as an assistant and helped him to bring the explosive device to the active condition.
Sentence to Kanavalau and Kavalyou to be read out in full scope.It makes 114 pages. Pronouncement of the sentence may take 4-5 hours.

Let us remind you, the prosecutor demanded to sentence Dzmitry Kanavalau and Uladzislau Kavalyou to death penalty. They are accused of the blasts in Vitsebsk in 2005, and of the blasts in Minsk in 2008 and 2011. The lawyers of defense insist that their clients’ guilt has not been proven.
Lyubou Kavalyova has stated that she wants the judge to read out the full text of the sentence, on the stairs of the House of Justice.
In her opinion, the people will be able to see whether there are proofs of the defendants’ guilt after pronouncement of the full text of the sentence.
Many journalists have gathered to hear the sentence, there are about three dozens cameras. Mobile network has started to be blocked in the area of the court.
The final trial will start at 11 a.m. today in the House of Justice in Minsk. Natives of Vitsebsk Dzmitry Kanavalau and Uladzislau Kavalyou are accused of organization of the blast in Minsk metro on April 11, the blast on the Independence Day-2008 in Minsk, and a series of blasts in Vitsebsk. The lawyers of defense insist that their clients’ guilt has not been proven.

Thailand has warned users of Facebook that they could face prosecution under harsh lese-majeste laws if they press ”share” or ”like” on images or articles considered unflattering to the Thai monarchy.
The prosecution of a Thai-born US citizen who has pleaded guilty to translating a banned biography of King Bhumibol Adulyadej has signalled that authorities are also targeting lese-majeste offences committed overseas.
Thailand’s Information and Communications Technology Minister, Anudith Nakornthap, says that even though Facebook clicks of ”like” or ”share” are only done to show support for messages, they could violate laws that carry sentences of three to 15 years jail for each charge.

Authorities in Thailand have asked Facebook to delete more than 10,000 pages of content as computer technicians in Bangkok scour the internet for royal insults. ”We have informed Facebook and sought their assistance in deleting content which is offensive to our monarchy,” Mr Anudith said.
Under Thai law, people face lese-majeste charges if they insult the king, queen, heir or regent. Even repeating details of an alleged offence is illegal.
The Computer Crimes Act also carries five-year jail terms for digital dissemination of information that threatens the security of the country or violates the ”peace and concord or good morals of the people”.
Public criticism of King Bhumibol, the world’s longest-serving monarch, is rare in Thailand. In the past four years, authorities have blocked more than 70,000 internet pages, most for insults to the monarchy, officials say.
The Asian Human Rights Commission has expressed ”grave concern” over the latest conviction and sentence of a person for lese-majeste, Ampon Tangnoppakul, 61, a retired truck driver and grandfather suffering from cancer. He wept this week after being sentenced to 20 years jail for sending ”vulgar” text messages judged to be insulting to Queen Sirikit.
Human rights groups estimate that more than 300 lese-majeste charges that have been laid in Thailand since 2006. They include Australian English-language teacher Harry Nicolaides, who was sentenced to six years in jail, commuted to three years on pleading guilty, over a book hardly anyone read. Only 50 copies were published. He received a royal pardon in February 2009 and was deported.
A Thai-born US citizen, Joe Gordon, 55, was detained in Thailand in May for translating the book about King Bhumibol in the US where he had lived for 30 years. He had returned to Thailand temporarily for medical treatment. Gordon, who pleaded guilty to a lese-majeste charge in October hoping for a lenient sentence, is awaiting sentencing.
The webmaster of the Thai website Prachatai, Chiranuch Premchaiporn, is on trial over comments posted on the site that were deemed insulting to the monarchy. Ms Chiranuch, 44, told the court she regularly read through the thousands of items posted daily on the message board and deleted potentially offensive messages when she found them. Prosecutors allege she did not act quickly enough.
Ms Chiranuch was recently awarded the Hellman-Hammett award given annually to writers or activists for expressing freedom of expression.

Die am 4. November 2011 unterzeichnete Leistungsvereinbarung zwischen dem Bundesministerium für Wissenschaft und Forschung und der Österreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften bedingt eine faktische Kürzung des Budgets der größten und bedeutendsten außeruniversitären Forschungseinrichtung unseres Landes. Infolge der entstehenden Finanzierungslücke von ca. 10–16 Mio. Euro jährlich bei einem Gesamtbudget von 74 Mio. Euro per annum drohen die Abgabe bzw. Schließung international anerkannter und nachweislich exzellenter Forschungseinrichtungen. Laut Aussage des Finanzdirektors der ÖAW bedeutet dies den Verlust von mindestens 300 eigenfinanzierten Vollzeitstellen der ÖAW im Zeitraum 2012–14 durch Abgabe und Schließung von Einrichtungen.
Bedroht sind allerdings möglicherweise bis zu 300 der derzeit 789 eigenfinanzierten Vollzeitäquivalente in den Forschungseinrichtungen bzw. 905 in der ÖAW insgesamt. Ein derart drastischer Personalabbau ist beispiellos in der Geschichte der 2. Republik. Die gegenwärtige gesamtwirtschaftliche Situation kann als Begründung dafür nicht ausreichen. In keinem anderen Bereich sind vergleichbare Kürzungen vorgesehen. Da die von Kündigung bedrohten Mitarbeiter/innen selbst Drittmittelprojekte in der Höhe von ca. 22 Mio. Euro akquiriert haben, sind negative Multiplikatoreffekte zu erwarten. Mit der Entlassung der Projektleiter/innen müssen deren Projekte eingestellt, die Projektmitarbeiter/innen gekündigt werden. Dies ist die nachhaltige Zerstörung von Wissen und Infrastruktur. Exzellenz und internationale Konkurrenzfähigkeit der österreichischen Forschung sind in Gefahr.
Grundlagenforschung ist ein wesentlicher Beitrag zum materiellen und ideellen Reichtum und Potenzial einer Gesellschaft. Die geplanten Maßnahmen stellen daher einen unermesslichen Schaden für den Wissenschafts- und Wirtschaftsstandort Österreich dar.
Begründung: Die Unterzeichneten appellieren an die politisch Verantwortlichen, die zahlreichen Deklarationen umzusetzen, in denen Forschung als der wichtigste Zukunftsfaktor unseres Landes bezeichnet wird, sowie für die langfristige Absicherung und den Ausbau der Forschung zu sorgen. Wir wenden uns an die Medien und Öffentlichkeit, um Aufmerksamkeit für die dramatischen wissenschaftlichen, wirtschaftlichen und gesamtgesellschaftlichen Folgen zu wecken und die drohende Zerstörung der ÖAW und damit des Wissenschaftsstandortes Österreich zu verhindern.“
