Flights  to Alaska from Europe or Europe to Alaska are a steal from Iceland Air starting May 15, 2013.

My searches on Iceland Air resulted with fares less than 670usd R/T while searches on discount airfare websites such as Orbitz turned up fares from 1900-2300usd for the same period.

Flights from London were ~1100usd with a possible stay in Reykjavik en route.  Contact Iceland Air for more details.

This is an excellent opportunity for European travelers to come to Alaska.  In the past Lufthansa offered great R/T fares but not in 2013

Shamengo pioneer Pierre Calleja has invented something truly remarkable–an algae lamp that absorbs CO2 in the air–at the rate of 1 ton PER YEAR, or what a tree absorbs over its entire lifetime! While development is still needed to make a cost-effective product, the microalgae streetlamp has the potential to provide significantly cleaner air in urban areas and revolutionize the cityscape.

Algae Street Lamps Suck Up C02, But How Exactly? | Earthtechling

Editor’s Note: This story, based upon information we’ve been seeing, holds some viability questions as to whether or not the lamps are powered by energy from photosynthesis, or simply C02 scrubbers. As such, we’ve positioned it more as a C02 scrubber, with thoughts on what it might take to evolve into an actual self-powered device.

We all remember from high school biology that plants use sunshine and CO2 to generate energy through photosynthesis, right? An outrageous new prototype lamp from designer Mike Thompson actually generates electricity from algae the same way, in the form of lighting that requires a bit of daily maintenance, not unlike a bonsai plant or a pet.

Stanford researchers find electrical current stemming from plants

Stanford engineers have generated electrical current by tapping into the electron activity in individual algae cells. Photosynthesis excites electrons, which can then be turned into an electrical current using a specially designed gold electrode. This study could be the first step toward carbon-free electricity directly from plants.

Best Party – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Best Party (Icelandic: Besti flokkurinn) is an Icelandic political party. The party ran in the 2010 city council election in Reykjavík and won a plurality on the Reykjavík City Council, receiving 34.7% of the vote, defeating the Independence Party which received 33.6%.[1][2][3]

The founder and chairman of the party is the incumbent Mayor of Reykjavík Jón Gnarr.[4] As the party was founded several months after the last Icelandic parliamentary election, it has not yet had the opportunity to compete on the national level. The party’s initial success is seen as a backlash against establishment parties in the wake of Iceland’s 2008-2011 financial crisis.[5]

Contents

History

The Best Party was founded in late 2009 by Jón Gnarr, an Icelandic actor, comedian and writer. Originally a joke party, it has from the beginning admitted that it will not honour any of its promises given before elections.[6] It claims all other parties are secretly corrupt, so it promises to be openly corrupt. Among its original goals was to satirize common themes in Icelandic politics, partly by mimicking the standard phrases, idioms and jargon used by Icelandic politicians.

However, since its electoral success in Reykjavík in 2010 the Best Party has become much more serious and has shown a genuine interest in governing. It has taken a left-wing stance on many issues. Although Jón identifies himself as an anarchist, the party as a whole is closer to the centre-left.[7]

Since its founding, the Best Party has developed into a full-grown political party with its own independent agenda, which has yet to be identified to an English-speaking audience. The theme song of Besti Flokkurinn is “Simply The Best” by Tina Turner. Prior to the 2010 election, the party published a new version of the song with new, Iceland-specific lyrics. A music video was also made, featuring Ágústa Eva Erlendsdóttir.[6]

Besti Flokkurinn’s Platform

  1. To help the households in the country: Family is the best thing in society. Governments need to meet the needs and demands of households. An ironclad shield wall needs to be raised around the households in this country. Icelandic households deserve only the best.
  2. To improve the quality of life of the Less Fortunate: We want the best of everything for this bunch and therefore offer free access to buses and swimming pools so you can travel around Reykjavik and be clean even if you’re poor or there’s something wrong with you.
  3. Stop corruption: We promise to stop corruption. We’ll accomplish this by participating in it openly.
  4. Equality: Everyone deserves the best regardless of who they are and where they come from. We will do our best for everyone so that everyone can be together on the best team.
  5. Increase transparency: It is best to have everything aboveboard so that the general public knows what is going on. We say we support that.
  6. Effective democracy: Democracy is pretty good, but an effective democracy is best. That’s why we want it.
  7. Cancel all debts: We listen to the nation and do as it wishes because the nation knows what’s best for itself.
  8. Free bus rides for students and cripples: We can offer more free things than any other party because we aren’t going to follow through with it. We could say whatever we want. For example, free flights for women or free cars for people who live in rural areas. It’s all the same.
  9. Free dental services for children and handicapped people: This is something that is lacking, and we definitely want to take part in promising it.
  10. Free access to swimming pools for everyone and free towels: This is something that everyone should fall for, and it’s the election promise we’re most proud of.
  11. Take those responsible for the economic collapse to court: Felt we had to include this.
  12. Complete equality of the sexes
  13. Listen more to women and old people: This bunch gets listened to far too little. It’s as if everyone thinks they are just complaining or something. We’re going to change that.[8][9][10]

Election 2010

The party’s first endeavor in politics was to present a list of candidates for the local election in Reykjavík in 2010. Its platform included free towels in all city swimming pools, a polar bear for the city zoo, a Disneyland at Vatnsmýri, the capital’s airport and a drug-free Althing by 2020. The party won six of the 15 seats on the Reykjavík City Council.[3] and governs the city alongside the Social Democratic Alliance as the senior coalition partner.

Monitor Water Privatization

ARD Monitor – Geheimoperation Wasser, EU fördert Wasserprivatisierung

The most important political changes are sometimes hidden in the details.
At stake is nothing less than the privatization oof the water supply all over Europe.
If the Commission succeeds,a public good will become an investmet opportunity with prospects for billions of profit in Germany alone.
It is a vicotry of big multilingual corporationswho fought a long time for this privatization.
The consequences for us consumers could be tremendous.
Stefan Stuchlig and Nikolaus Steiner will show us now what we are facing there.
Water is not just H2O, water is life.
Access to water has been declared a human right by the United Nations
In Germany, water normally belongs to the cities and municipalities
so all of us – still!
But that could change soon.
With drastic consequences for Germany
The European Commission wants to start here: in Portugal
Brussels demands that the country will sell its water supply
Here, in Pacos de Ferreira the privatization of water already begun
Against the will of the citizens, as they tell us.
“In the past you could drink the water here.”
“It was good, fresh water!”
“Not anymore!”
“I’m 66 years old and have always drunk the water!”
“Now we will not even drink the water from the public well.”
“Yes, now you’re no longer meant to drink from the pubic water fountain.”
The municipality made a profit when selling it, but only once
now the citizans must live with the consequences
People show us their bills:
And indeed, the monthy amounts are horrendous,
many citizans now have problems paying for their drinking water.
“The consequence of privatization here
in Pacos de Ferreira were devasting.
We had a 400% price increase in a few years
And then again every year 6% price increase.
This is a disaster.
Crisis-hit countries such as Portugal and Greece need money,
therefore the Troika in Brussels is now secretly forcing them to sell their pubic water operators.
In the annex of the Troika contracts that MONTIOR has obtained, one can see:
In Grreece the large waterworks of Athens and Thessaloniki shall be soold.
With Portugal, the annex states
that the privatization of the national water company “Aguas de Portugal”
should be promoted
In Portugal, protests against the privatization are increasing,
because people are afraid of high prices and poor quality.
But the crisis-hit countries are just the beginning.
The EU commision now brings out the big blow.
The new proposal for the concession directive
actually hides the requirement
that the market for water supply should be opened up.
What does that mean?
Heide Rühle, the water expert of the European Greens,
has studed the proposal carefully.
She believes that the Commission is close to achieving its goal – water privatization..
“The concession policy does not make it directy,
does not open the door drectly to privatization of water.
it makes it through the back door.”
“So it opens, step by step, the possibility for private companies
to enter the market,so that the market is opened up.”
He even denies that he wants to privatize the water at all:
the powerful EU Commissioner Barnier says
that his policy would only reorganize the market.
“It’s going tostay the way it is.”
“But why do we need the directive then?”
“Because we need rules.”
“Each German municipality will continue to decide on their water,
but now we give it the opportunity to hand the water over to a private partner.”
So there it is.
The idea of the Commission: water licenses have to be tendered throughout the EU.
But this will benefit private companies
Because with the dumping prices of big corporations,
municipal operators cannot compete.
This, while 82% of Germans want the water supply to be
organized by the cities and municipalities.
Here, cities and municipalities even take back privatizations
For instance Berlin
In 1999, the water company was partially privatized
After mass protests, the city has begun to buy back shares,
an expensiive way,
but the first success for this citizens’ initiatiive.
But the new strategy of the European Commission could negate this idea.
“The new -EU directive will put everything under pressure for privatization.”
“And Berlin’s experience shows that even partial privatization,
called a public-private-partnership (PPP),
in reality only benefits private businesses.”
“They have a guaranteed profit, and we pay.”
For private investors, water is a commodity like electricity or gold.
Becaus water is an object of speculation, water is a commodity.
Analysts estimate the water market in the EU at a 3-digit billions sum.
And they want it: big companies such as Thames Water and Veolia
but also German companies RWE and Gelsenwasser
just waiting for privatization.
Water privatization seldom has the promised effects,
as a study by the University of Barcelona in 2010 confirmed:
there is evidence that after the privatization
in some places the water quality had declined.
But most of all: it doesn’t get cheaper.
Quote: “We do not find any evidence of […] relationship between private production and costs (lowering!!).”
Oliver Hoedeman: Corporate Europe Observatory
“The promises which are always associated with water privatization, <> are barely ever kept.”
“On the contrary, there is tendency to rising prices
and the promised investment into the infrastructure
hardly ever materialize”
Because money for the expensive network building does not match the quick profit.
Examples such as London or Bordeaux show:
pipes are rotting and dirt gets into the drinking water,
forcing the companes to ofton add chlorine, to maintain hygiene.
Why does the EU Commission decide against the will of the European Population?
On what studies is this based?
Who are they talking to behind those windows?
For Example, with the Steering Group.
A group of experts that advises the European Commission on issues of water policy.
The list of participants is amaziing:
it mainly includes representatives from the water industry and related sectors.
“This group is about water quality, which is also important.”
“I didn’t chose this group in person,
but you want me to say
that our expert groups should be more balanced, I agree.”
Christian Ude: President of the German Association of Cities
“It’s really unfortunate that some competition commissioner
only has in mind the needs of his partner from the CEO floors
and not the needs of the population.”
Water – a human right or water – a billion dollar business?
Brussels has already decided:
water in the future shall belong to the corporations rather than all of us.
Veiled in a European regulation the European commission tries to accomplish the project of a century.
